Meeting Agenda
  • Celebrating 25 years of the Lake Murray Association
  • Billy Chastain, Shoreline Manager for Dominion SCE&G will be the key speaker to tell us what is going on around the lake and what the story is on weeds, lake levels, water quality and any new rules or regulations before we get into the heart of the season.

Why did we need a Lake Association?
Bob Keener was our first President and he had a job on his hands.  Rod Shealy, owner of the Lake Murray News was the one who set it in motion and the first meeting attracted about 150 people.

It began over lake level concerns, but much happened after that.  We developed several fundraisers over the years to support the mission of the association.  The Lake Murray Tour of Homes was born out of that need and soon put us on the map and was a very popular event.

Over the years, a great relationship was developed with SCE&G.   V.P. Jim Landreth arrived and our mission to talk to SCE&G on a regular basis and to be heard was beneficial to both LMA and SCE&G.  It was not long before Bill Argentieri came on board and suddenly the Board of Directors of the Lake Murray Association felt they had two great relationships with SCE&G.  We began to see the lake level improve and after we later worked for a couple of years on the license proposal it truly improved.

A big problem on the lake was when Hydrilla appeared.  We worked with SCDNR and soon sterile grass carp was introduced.  We developed the Safety Consortium which brought Lake Murray law enforcement together with us, a Golf Tournament to improve the treasury and the wonderful side effect of meeting members, speaking at Home Owners Organizations, the very important years we spent on the relicense committees, testing water quality, cleaning islands, selling Dock Signs to help law enforcement get to us quicker in an emergency and many other projects.

We have had 4 meetings every year for 25 years on everything concerning safety, water quality, legislative updates from many of our legislators, a helicopter, at that time on the lake, demonstrate how monitoring was done on the lake by Lexington’s sheriff’s department.  Richland Sheriff’s department as well as Newberry and Saluda worked with us in our Safety Consortium. We had speakers on run off, creating gardens to prevent it, catching water in barrels and discouraging toxic spraying of weeds.

4 H20
4-H20 is designed to teach our children about water quality and care of our environment in conjunction with the well-known 4-H programs we have known about since our childhood.  LMA worked with Clemson many years ago to establish this program on Lake Murray.
