The Lake Murray Safety Consortium

Several years ago organizations involved in Safety on Lake Murray met on an informal basis to share information.  Unfortunately, funding limitations precluded the use of a centralized meeting place and as the agencies/organizations scattered to other parts of the Lake, the meetings were discontinued. In the summer of 2010, the LMA Safety Committee recommended to the board of directors that LMA sponsor the meeting of a group consisting of the LMA, the Department of Natural Resources, the four county sheriff’s departments, the Lake Murray Power Squadron, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the SCE&G.  The board unanimously approved the proposal along with the suggested bylaws.  The group has been meeting on a regular basis since last June when the bylaws were also approved.  The bylaws state in part: “The LMSC shall have the primary purpose of sharing information between those state agencies involved in safety on the Lake and those other activities or entities that have involvement or interest in the same.”  The group has been meeting aboard the Southern Patriot and has been enthusiastically sharing information.  Recently, the LMSC decided as a group to be more proactive in promoting safety on the Lake.  Several initiatives have been put in place and more are in the planning stages.
