Mother Nature has been good to us this winter and spring with an
abundance of rain. Although the lake is rising nicely, the southeastern
states are still in drought conditions. Many of the rivers, lakes and
wells are still below normal levels. As the population continues to shift
to the sunbelt it puts an even bigger strain on our most important natural
resource...our water supply.
As the drought took its toll in the southeast, water disputes between
Georgia & North Carolinia and Georgia & Florida have ensued. Each state is
responsible for developing their water management plan and it needs to be
in line with the federal government. Presently South Carolina has some
laws that cover some water usage but it is fragmented and difficult to
enforce. What is needed is a comprehensive water use law that is managed
by one group and has some teeth.
Mike Massey from Lake Hartwell Association is working to that end. He
is working with the SC House of Representatives to pass (H4393) SC
Statewide Management Act which is in regard to surface water and Inter
Basin Transfer. LMA has invited Mike to speak at our next public meeting
on April 22nd at the Lexington High School. It will be a very informative
and educational discussion.
Holly Jones from the Riverbanks Zoo will also be speaking at the
Lexington meeting and always has exciting things to show us. You won't
want to miss her presentation.
Make sure to order your tickets for the Pontoon Tour of Homes coming in
May. The homes are lovely and the boat ride should be spectacular this
time of year.
The LMA Board of Directors continues working hard to make your voices
heard during the relicensing process.
